Well, you have seen the website, maybe visited Laleham Archery Club or even a member of our club. Now we have a book of the history of Laleham Archery Club.
The author , Roy Smither comments “Some of you may be wondering why anyone in their
right mind would want to write a book on the extremely unedifying (some might say
inconsequential) subject of an archery club, let alone archery per se, which some
might just enjoy. In essence the drive to do this was stimulated by several things
that seemed to happen more or less simultaneously in 2005. The first was seeing the
book that the Laleham Golf Club had produced for their centenary year in 2003, and
which several current LAC Club members have had the opportunity to browse. The author(s)
in this instance had 100 years’ worth of uninterrupted committee meeting minutes
to trawl through as evidence. The fact that LAC also had its second home at Laleham
Golf Club also contributed to this inner feeling of wanting to find out more. The
second thing was the fact that our Club, in 2005, was in its 50th anniversary year,
and what better way to mark the occasion than to bring together all those tales that
I’ve listened to, into a complete record of our Club. I also became aware of our
founder, Stan Hewitt’s death in 2005, as the Club was poised to invite him and his
wife, Peggy, to present the prizes in our celebratory, new FITA event in May that
year-
I had learnt quite a lot about some of the earlier history of the Club from Keith Bence, mainly during the bar sessions on a Friday evening (ah, the good old bar!) – including titbits about the Laleham Bow, and those who had represented us at the Olympic Games. Just by keeping my ears open I learnt from others who have either been members in the past or who have contributed positively in some way to the development of the Club over five decades. And all this whetted my appetite, for there is something exceptionally positive to record about this minority sport of ours, and in particular, our Club.”
So if that has whetted your appetite why not read some of the extracts from the book in the pdf documents below, or if you have a slow connection or just want details on where and how you can order your own copy click here If you wish to contact the author of the book with any queries or to even order your own copy he can be contacted at
